4:40 pm - ARGH.
So, if you can see this, maybe you've heard about the purge supposedly happening on IJ of accounts where there haven't been posts since January 2010. Hey, here's me, posting. You should, too, if you want to keep your IJ.

*sigh*

11:08 am - Hey, he managed to get Jesse Helms turned around (somewhat), who knows?

McPalin to meet with Bono, among others.

I will be very interested to hear what Bono has to say to these two crackpots. Hope he doesn't disappoint.

Also, thanks to

What Barack Obama needs right now is a chat with President Bartlet.

2:33 pm - Massively depressing, but not surprising.

Check out The Star's interactive map on GTA farm loss over a fifteen year span. *weary sigh* Can you see why going into farming seems a tad quixotic?

3:40 pm - I can has LJ back? Maybe?
http://community.livejournal.com/lj_policy/1935.html

This is a start, certainly. I've read the current policy statement, and here's my conclusions:

- the DMCA info is not surprising but potentially worrisome for fandom
- I'm encouraged by the allowances made for RPGing real people
- it looks like fiction is okay
- pretty good news re: imagery, at last. Unless you're using explicit graphics as icons, but frankly, I don't like seeing them pop up on my flist anyway, so...

Regardless of the above, it doesn't solve their customer "service" (*cough*) issues, but I don't think we'll know what's what with that until it's put into use. Hopefully the election of an actual LJ user to the advisory board will help.

12:24 pm - Whatever floats yer boat.

Stumbling over a new (to me) kind of slash is (assuming I'm familiar with the canon) generally intriguing, and usually either in a "ooo, that sounds neat!" way or a "WTF is this person smoking?!" way. Doesn't mean I'll read it, but I like the fact that there really are more things in heaven and earth etc. etc. (Horatio/Hamlet is no doubt out there, and if you could be so kind as to direct me to anything good in that regard, I'd appreciate it). Smurf slash (yes, it's popped up on my flist), while squickifying on a number of levels... makes a kind of sense. (But I'm not gonna read it.) Today's latest "um... okay..." offering: High Fidelity, Rob/Barry.

Right, then.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: there's something for everyone.

Now, pardon me while I go back and read an Adam/Macphisto horror story.

...What?

10:46 am - Crossposted to my LJ as well.
http://community.livejournal.com/lj_election_en/25463.html

Friends -- and I don't just mean fannish friends, I mean all y'all who believe in freedom of speech and expression, and who have found things like the breastfeeding default icon debacle, strikethrough, boldthrough, the change of management, and the state of customer service hereabouts, to be a wee bit concerning at the very least -- please go there and vote! However:

Please vote wisely.

Here's some posts that might be helpful in that process:

I don't expect that getting one friendly face on the advisory board will result in dramatic change. But, it's something.

11:10 am - I'm at a place called Vertigo.
Okay. Tonight's the last night to see U23D in Toronto. Seriously. There's one theatre left showing it -- the Empire at Empress Walk, which despite what their site says, is at 5071 (NOT 5095!) Yonge St., across from Mel Lastman Square -- and it's not IMAX.

This is a GOOD thing.

I'm kicking myself because, after seeing the movie at that theatre last night with my daughter, I wish I could see it again in that theatre or a similar one. Seeing it in IMAX at the Scotiabank theatre, on a curved screen, meant that much of the movie wasn't in 3D and some of it was doubled. Seeing it last night on a regular screen but with 3D projection? ROCKED. It was all 3D, no double-vision effect, FANTASTIC. And there was hardly anyone in there. Five minutes before the lights went down, there was just the two of us. I was a bit worried we were in the wrong place, but then a rather handsome gentleman in his 40s came in, and then a woman my age, and then later we realized that a couple of 20-somethings were sitting in the row behind us. That was IT. Six people in the entire theatre. Granted, the whole complex looked dead at that point in the evening (considering what gorgeous weather we're having, that's hardly surprising), but still... weird. Such a fun movie. I cried, again. I was gleeful, again. I was amused by Bono, again (Bunny, while waiting for the movie to start: "Does Bono act silly in this?" Me: "Yeah, a little bit." Bunny, grinning: "He's like that.") The bunny thought it was really cool, and we made it all the way through (for a five year old, that's pretty impressive). So on the whole, it was a great experience, and I wish I could do it again, but there are other plans for tonight.

I do have some quibbles, which have nothing to do with the movie itself:

- The theatre has no box office as such, you have to use debit (not credit) at these stupid terminals, some of which don't work. Also you can buy concessions at these terminals, though you don't have to. They don't tell you this.

- There is NO protein to be found at any of the food vendors, as far as I could tell. Carbs, carbs, junk carbs. Bleaaaaah. Now, there's a Loblaws in the basement, and a Toby's resto on another floor, but... it's not like you can bring that into the theatre.

- U23D is a G-rated movie. The preview for Journey To The Centre Of The Earth (3D) is most assuredly NOT. I had to cover the kiddo's eyes. Would've been good to have had some warning for that... Nothing like a T.Rex coming toward you with jaws wide open, eh? (Mind you, I think that movie will be pretty damn cool. Just... not for a five year old.)

- Parking WTF? The underground parking is ostensibly for the Loblaws, even though there are many other businesses there, and the theater is of course open later than most other places (except maybe Toby's). However, the signs in the parking garage say that it closes when Loblaws closes. Um. Okaaaaay... I went to the parking attendant to ask what was up with that, and he said "if you pay $4, you can stay later". Right. There is NOTHING to indicate this, in the garage. Where do you park if you're coming for the late show? We were still out of there before Loblaws closed at 9, and it cost about the same, ultimately, but... *hands*

- Getting there, and then being there. For one thing, driving on Yonge during rush hour... eep. However, I'm not fond of North York, that part especially. Yuppies in SUVs and Beamers thinking they own the road, cavernous condo towers, urban disorientation, being surrounded by fashion victim teenagers... Ick. Not my scene. That's just me, though.

Anyway. If you can wrangle getting there and you want to see the movie as it should be seen, today's your last chance -- there are three showings, one at 3:30, one at 7:05, and one at 9:45. Oh, and you get to keep the 3D glasses!

(Elvis icon because I haven't yet uploaded any U2 ones. *hangs head in shame*)

3:22 pm - You're doing it wrong.

At the bottom of this article on the upswing in food rioting, there's an animated banner ad.

The first time I looked at the article, the ad was for President's Choice Apple Crumble. Just like homemade. Tender chunks of juicy apple, blah blah blah.

The second time, it was for Shoppers Drug Mart. From late night cravings to midnight snacking -- More stores open late.

The third time, it was for fitness stuff at Sears.

*blink*

6:51 pm - Wee bits of happiness.
1. A neck rub from my lovely man, which has done wonders for my headache.

2. Comfort food.

3. Snuggles on the couch. :)

4. Getting more confirmation that really, most of my friends ultimately want the same thing: to escape from the city with all of our friends and be artsy geeks on a farm together.

5. I can play most of U2's City of Blinding Lights on the ukelele. Yes, really.

6. My daughter is singing Beautiful Day.

9:38 pm - The apple and the tree.
There are things I think must be genetic, and the yen for solving puzzles is one of them. My mum always had a jigsaw puzzle on the go, and a crossword or word search book. I'm also deeply fond of all of these things, and sudoku too (Mum would've loved it). The bunny is a big jigsaw puzzle fan. We've plowed through puzzles up to a hundred pieces, so I figured, ah, what the heck. We were in a toy aisle and saw these Disney gallery puzzles -- real wood, 1000 pieces, beautiful things. We got a Peter Pan one -- where they're flying across the London sky.

Tonight we got started on it on a table in the basement. We got all the characters put together, and the moon above them. A good start. Except the rest of it is mostly night sky and dark cityscape. Ahaha. Well, it'll be challenging, and I'll do it even if she loses interest.

We also watched old school Sesame Street on You Tube, sang along with a bunch of songs, and now Legolas and his seven wives and umpteen children (three babies, countless five-to-six-year-olds) are settling down to sleep in the Barbie house (do the LDS have a stake in Mattel, one wonders? ;).

Life is good.
